about

Like many jazz musicians of his generation, trumpeter Josh D. Reed’s origin story as a musician didn’t start with jazz records. “I was definitely a punk rock kid,” Reed recalls. “I played in ska bands, took photos at punk rock and metal shows, and listened to indie-rock.” On his adventurous upcoming album No Signs Ahead, Reed showcases his musical DNA through an eclectic set of covers used as vehicles for avant-jazz rock exploration. “I wanted to be authentic to the music I grew up with and that inspired me to be a musician, so I wanted to record those songs instead of what we default to when we think of jazz standards,” Reed states.

Reed has assembled a stellar cast of musicians to fill out his electric quartet. He has performed with guitarist Tim Wendel and bassist Zack Teran for over a decade, first meeting in the Colorado jazz scene; the three musicians appeared together on Wendel’s 2022 release Westward You. Dave King, known for his work with pioneering bands like Happy Apple, The Bad Plus, and Broken Shadows, fills the drum chair with his singular creative drive. Colorado-based tenor saxophonist Heath Walton expands the band to a quintet for “Weird Fishes,” and “Locomotive.”

The album’s six tracks span a range of genres and styles, but the consistent underpinning is the intensity and immediacy of the band’s interpretations of these songs. The album opens with Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box,” which Reed announces with an extended noise solo on trumpet over ethereal chorused guitar pads. Track two is Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes,” driven by King’s masterful build of tension throughout on the drum kit. “Between the Bars” is an introspective take on Elliott Smith's melancholy classic. “Locomotive” is the one cover from the jazz catalog, re-imagining Thelonious Monk’s swinging piano as a driving math-rock groove. “True Love Waits” highlights Reed’s love of Radiohead again, and includes a gorgeous palette of layered pedals and free improvisation. Wilco’s “Hell Is Chrome” closes the album and grounds the listener to a soulful groove and guitar accompaniment.
